Having adopted a rigorous approach to researching and testing new techniques and products, the team ensures Future Biogas is at the forefront of the industry.
Key performance indicators (KPIs)
The biology team trains all new members of staff at our sites, providing recommendations for the KPIs that will monitor plant stability and optimisation, as well as sampling frequency and methodology.
The team will also dictate the standard operating procedures for sampling and in situ analyses, to find early indicators of digester instability. For in depth monitoring, samples are routinely sent to the central laboratory for complete analysis.
Each month, every site receives tailored advice from the biology team, based on the interpretation of laboratory results combined with operational data, including adjustments to feeding, optimising operating conditions and the supply of additives such as our in-house developed nutrients.
Trials
In order to provide trusted feedstock characterisation and optimisation recommendations, the biology team conducts laboratory-scale trials. These involve proprietary lab-scale fermenter systems under carefully controlled conditions to replicate full-scale sites. The interpretation of data and results is then used to advise sites.
The team also conducts full-scale trials, with experimental planning, setup and close monitoring of plant KPIs with the site staff. Advanced data analysis and interpretation is conducted to report results, conclusions and recommendations for continuous application.
Feedstock mixtures and feed rates
This involves the sampling and analysis of ensiled feedstock to develop the “clamps map”, to understand the distribution of feedstock. The goal is to optimise biogas potential in conjunction with stock and storage availability. At a site level, this will guide plant operators on the changes to make to feed mixtures in order to maximise production. Alternative feedstock are also analysed to understand their potential benefits to the feedstock mixture.
Selection and development of additives
The Future Biogas biology team has developed an in-house approach to nutrient additives, optimised for each specific site to provide all the nutrients required for maximum biogas production. The team identifies planned and reactive additive requirements and works with suppliers to improve formulations, trial new products and develop solutions.
