Our Commitment
Sustainability is a fundamental aspect of our business. As one of the largest operators of biomethane assets in the UK, we leverage our position in the sector to drive change through pushing best practice in sustainability in the industry. We are committed to minimising our negative impacts and maximising our positive contributions to the communities where we operate. We strive to achieve a sustainable future for our planet and its inhabitants, and we believe that this can only be accomplished by pushing beyond compliance and working together with our employees, customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
The sustainability team is responsible for managing the sustainable products at Future Biogas. This includes ongoing operations and the research and development for new projects.
Operations
We submit approximately 100 sustainability submissions detailing the lifecycle of our emissions in line with UK government sustainability criteria. This includes 20 annual independent sustainability audits covering our full operational portfolio and head office.
We have been involved driving best practice in sustainability since we began operations in 2010 which included developing one of the most widely used GHG emission tools in the AD industry - the Ricardo Biomethane and Heat AD GHG calculator tool.
As we move forward, our ambition is to further drive down emissions on existing sites beyond regulatory compliance.
Project Carbon Harvest
Project Carbon Harvest stands out for its distinctive sustainability benchmarks. Unlike conventional AD sites, the products from Project Carbon Harvest are directed towards voluntary markets, no longer relying on government subsidies. This shift places a heightened emphasis on the perception of sustainability, subjecting our offerings to increased public scrutiny, particularly as major corporations leverage them for genuine decarbonisation efforts. Consequently, our sustainability practices, criteria, and verification procedures must surpass the industry's current standards.
In addition, Project Carbon Harvest includes carbon removal certificates as a core product. This pioneering initiative introduces an entirely new dimension to our operations, necessitating the implementation of robust measurement, reporting, and verification standards. As we venture into this uncharted territory, we are committed to upholding the highest standards of environmental integrity and accountability, setting a precedent for the industry at large.
Our sustainability team are working hard to optimise that carbon intensity of the new sites and have created an in-house life cycle assessment tool which has received quality assurance from SLR consulting.
